Some oil paintings contain sparks of life which defy destruction; in the hands of the artist they may morph and evolve, undergoing change after change. Forms can be damaged, then salvaged and repaired, their surfaces scraped and sanded. They may be coated again with gesso, and made available to receive fresh artistic statements. So, bold new paintings may have histories; they may be layered with ideas and live on in new form. These paintings are palimpsests.
